More on the Field

Golden Honey

The group of 8 migrant dogs are beginning to emerge in one and twos. Some of you may remember we had blogged a few months ago about these dogs and in this group, a small pup was seen limping when they were first sighted. After the first few times, the whole group dispersed to be seen either alone or in couples.

Teddy was one such loner.

Johnny and Judy was one such couple. We suspect they are brother and sister as they are both the same shade of brown and small sized dogs but the sister was much smaller. They were also very close to each other. At that time, Judy was the pup who was seen limping .

One of our feeders became very attached to Johnny and when he appeared one day with a face that had a bleeding eye and bite marks which would later disfigure half his face, she arranged for him to be relocated and fostered and now adopted.

Johnny with his bleeding face, the day of his rescue.

Handsome Johnny now, much loved

Unfortunately they could not rescue Judy as she ran away, but would see her from afar time and time again.

For a while, nobody sighted Judy and she was presumed dead, till recently, about a few weeks ago, round about the same time when Teddy gave birth, another feeder spotted a small size, brown fluffy dog. We call her Golden Honey as she has a lovely coat. After comparing notes and photographs, we discovered that it is long lost Judy but no longer limping.

Lovely Honey, friendly Honey, very sweet and gentle, but very timid is still wandering out there, too afraid to show herself except very late at night. Thank God for all this while even during the disappearance of Blackie and Shadow, our feeders are still leaving food out in the field. We have long suspected there are dogs who still come to feed late at night but we could never be sure as we never see them although food disappears and containers toppled over. Seeing Honey, aka Judy, alive after all these months gladden our hearts that we did not desert her and even though she had no one to turn to, with her brother gone, she still had the food we leave for the night dogs to keep her alive.

Beautiful Honey is very small in size, sweet in temperament

When we saw Honey the other day, our first thought was to immediately rescue her as she is so small and so adoptable as she is of HDB size, our heart tugged at the sight of this tiny dog all alone in the wilderness, but something made us stop in our tracks. A sharp eyed friend saw her swollen teats and some droplets of milk on them. Oh no, Honey we suspect, has most probably recently given birth.... we cannot rescue her, her pups will die if she does not return to them. But where are they?

How do we locate her nest. They are not in the field as she runs off into another direction after eating our food. We have tailed her and it leads to a restricted area where we cannot enter. sigh.  Her nest is probably there. How many pups, we don't know. Who fathered them, no one has seen.

We wait and see what happens next. Wait till Honey appear with her pups for since we cannot go in, she must come out. We do not know how to help her pups but we know we have to carry on leaving food for her. That is all we can do now.

Little

has has been rescued and is slowly recovering at her fosterer's. She has been to a vet and found to be anaemic and malnourished. She also had a fever when the vet examined her and she is now on medication, recuperating and resting.  She has been shaved, groomed and cleared of ticks and fleas.

Time, peace, rest and much love is what she needs and what she will get at G's place. With the fever, it is a good thing Little was rescued at the right time or she would have perished on the streets.

Little is very small in size and estimated to be around 10 months old.  We are all very happy for this little baby girl.  She is such a sweetheart, so quiet and docile.  We know there will be a loving home waiting for her when the time comes. God will take care of that, of this we are trusting Him.

Teddy and Pups
are doing very well. Teddy is taking to domestication like a fish to water.  From her behaviour she definitely was an owned dog in the past as she walks around in anticipation of being fed and following her fosterer around. She has been bathed in special shampoo and looks so much better.  She wags her short stump of her tail (it's been cropped in her past life), happy to greet visitors and enjoys her meals.

Her pups, Sandy, Rocky and Bubbles are growing up fast and such delight. Bubbles used to be called Scrappy, a name changed as we didn't really want our rescued pup to be called a scrap even though it sounded cute. The pups know no fear, no danger and just sleep, eat and play in bliss and contentment. They are fortunate pups to be spared their mother's misery.

Sandy has gone to her new home a few days ago. She reportedly slept through her first night with very little whines and whimpers and her new family delights in her company and puppy mischief. She has been renamed Cupcake.

Rocky will be going to his new home even as this blog is being published. The family adopting Rocky has been waiting for a long time to adopt. They had read about Teddy and her pups in the wild and told us that when the pups are rescued, their home will be open to one pup.  What great readers we have! Rocky is the only male in the surviving litter and he is such a handsome dog with great bone structure. We imagine him to grow big and strong, protecting his owners and returning their love with his.

They are both going to great homes and we know they will be much treasured and loved by their family. Bubbles is still up for adoption and we also pray for a good home for her.

Two days ago, we discovered that the blue shed where Teddy had her litter is now flattened and pieces strewn all over. The workmen have gone, disappeared without a trace and no warning. There is no evidence of life in that place.

If Teddy and her pups are still there, they would have been crushed beneath as well, and no one will be the wiser. A dead dog out in the wild is just another scrap for the environmental man to clean up.  We thank God for His Perfect Timing and His Protection over our beloved furry friends out in the wild.  Yes, we know our God is keeping watch over them for us.

Bubbles for Adoption

Bubbles is very smart and already wags her tail in glee when we pick her up. She is full of fun and possesses character and spirit. She is also very intelligent. She was the first to wag her tail and pant. In the wild we remember her as the first that learnt to crawl out from her mother's safety zone and would scamper to the forbidden side. Many times Teddy would nip her back in the nest. Yes Bubbles is just that, bubbly and fun.

Contact us at anaterry@singnet.com.sg or call 9115-3067 if you wish to view Bubbles for adoption. Regretfully, she is not suitable for HDB residences.

October is Adopt-A-Dog month

Extracted from The Examiner, Chicago

Though we are midway through the month of October, .... The American Humane
Association has labeled this month as "Adopt-a-Dog Month." There are millions of dogs in shelters and each one is potentially facing a very bleak future. You never know how they ended up there-it could be a great older dog whose owners just couldn't take care of him or a young puppy whose owners had too many in a litter. Whatever the case, wouldn't it be a great time to see if a pet might fit into your family? Marie Belew Wheatley, president and CEO of American Humane, stated, "Right now there is a greater need than ever for people to go to a shelter and find their new best friend. The nation's economy is negatively impacting community shelters and rescue organizations, filling them to capacity many times over. This October, we hope people will renew their commitment to help these animals that are so in need of forever homes."

If you have assessed your home and this just isn't the right time to get a dog, there are still some valuable things you can do to help. First, you might see if you can volunteer at your local shelter or animal rescue group. Most are looking for responsible animal-lovers all year long and welcome a pair of loving hands. You could volunteer at a shelter to help care for the animals. If you don't have time for that, what about offering your services?

Start up a website that focuses on the dog you saw at the shelter but can't take home yourself. Put his or her picture up and do a little grass-roots promoting to help find the dog a good home. If you want something less hands-on, how about editing or creating the shelter's newsletter? Offer to put together a flyer of events and then post them around your neighborhood for added marketing.

Another good way to help is to support your local shelters. And I'm not just talking about money-we all know how tight that is these days. But what about blankets, food, toys, newspaper, treats, etc? Shelters need all these things and would be more than thankful for citizens dropping off a bag of dog food for their hungry little mouths. ...

Lets make it October is Adopt a Dog Month For Singapore as well.

It doesn't rain, it pours

This week has been pretty upsetting. We received calls for help from different parts of the island, for rescue, fostering or adoption. All as urgent, all as desperate. We are posting them as extracted from their emails........

Desperation - little 'Little'

'

Pitiful whines were heard and that was how Little was found; amidst heaps of scrap metals and rubbish. Alone and afraid, with no one to trust, Little is rarely seen in the day. Sometimes missing even for weeks, Little resides in an industrial site where heavy trailers are a common sight, big stray dogs roam and mark their territories and the harsh reality of life is such that in a place like this where there's no love, food is scarce, only the fittest and fiercest survive.

Little is considered small sized for a local breed (hence her name) and her lovely marking of white and brown patches makes her even more adorable. Little has the sweetest gaze and gentle little eyes. Little is often seen alone, scared and ventures out only in the late evenings or when the other big dogs had their fill.

Little is barely a year old and too young a life to be shattered as yet, she used to have that jovial spirit in her but as of this date, 7 October, she came to M looking shrivelled and the saddest in her eyes is just too much to bear. She clung onto M's legs and when M bend down to pat her, she lifted her head and with all her might, she jumped onto M's lap and dived her head into M's arms.

Would you care to give Little a place called home? To shower her with love and to let her live. Life? To show Little that there is a difference between breathing and living?

If you are interested to adopt or foster 'Little', please email to winterain14@gmail.com

Saving Lives - Musky and Rusky

These two dogs urgently need foster/adoption. They are just taken away by authorities due to owner's cruelty and neglect. They had been caged with barely food and water...covered with faeces...still so happy when taken away by authority without knowing that they will be put down by tomorrow if no one takes them out..Musky - unsterilised male JRT, 1 year 4 months old. Rusky, Jrt crossed, 9 months old, weigh less than 15kg. They are friendly but still a little wary of strangers...

Kindly sms to 97679495 or 96890777 if u or anyone u know can help. Please help to spread the word...

Gone Home

Shaggy has gone home for good.  When we rescued him from the road three months ago, little did we know that he would be with us for such a short time. What would you do if you see a tiny little dog shivering in the middle of a road, usually busy with big vehicles. Your first thought would be to pick him up and comfort him, as he looked scared and sad. Which is what we did.
http://homelessinseletar.blogspot.com/2009/06/left-to-die.html

Shaggy was fortunate to have been fostered by two lovely girls, the first E and then the second E, coincidentally both with the same names.  Circumstances prevented them from being able to provide him a permanent home but they showered him with as much love as they could in the short span of time with him, comfort, protection and shelter.  He was given several names from Oldie to Boy-Boy to Cloud.

On July 1, a kind lady C, and her daughter, S, read about Cloud and immediately offered him a home. At that time we already knew Cloud was old, we were told by the first vet he was around 10 years old but the family didn't mind. They said that Cloud reminded them very much of their old dog and cried when they first saw him.  They called him Shaggy after their old dog.  And so Shaggy had finally, a permanent home, a family who loved him and pampered him knowing he never had much. They took him to a vet for a boil on his toe and this vet did a thorough test. Shaggy was not 10 years old as estimated but more likely nearly 14. He had a heart murmur and so should not be excited or stressed. It was a sombering to discover that Shaggy's time with them would not be long and all the more whatever time they had with Shaggy became even more precious, if not already.

On September 24, the inevitable happened. We were called at 8.15 pm that Shaggy was breathless. We met C at the vet's clinic and the vet said Shaggy suffered a mild stroke. We decided to put Shaggy on oxygen to aid his breathing as well as medication to make him comfortable. He would be on the ventilator the whole night and the vet said if he pulled through that night, it would be a good sign.

Knowing that we just didn’t have the heart to put him down, we left it to God to decide as long as Shaggy was not in pain, which the vet  assured us he wasn't. Just as we were preparing to leave having said our goodbyes to Shaggy, when we were at the exit, there was a bark, followed by 3 more. We looked at each other and the same thought occurred, Was Shaggy calling out his goodbyes too? Would this be his last say. Emotionally, we all ran back to him and kissed him. We whispered into his ears, “If it gets too hard to stay Shaggy, then go, go in peace for you are tired and have fought a good fight. But if you can stay, then wait another day for us to visit you again.”

The next morning at 8 plus, the vet called that Shaggy left us. He must have tried to hold on the whole night and almost made it but his little heart couldn’t carry on. Though his spirit was strong, his little body was just too weak and tired.  Young S who never did get a chance to say goodbye visited his body, planted a kiss on his head and whispered her farewell bravely.  Dear S, what a sweet girl at only 10 knew the meaning of love.

Shaggy did not die a homeless, nameless dog. He left with a name, Shaggy, he left with a collar, a leash, his water and food bowl, his little toys scattered where he used to carry them around, his little treasure of bones he would steal from the bigger dogs, his little soft bed that still carries his smell.

Shaggy loved this treat. He took this packet from his big sized brother, when they weren't looking.

Shaggy rolls around in glee, he is so playful at heart

Yes, Shaggy left much much loved by those who have met him and cared for him. He left behind a household full of people to shed tears for this brave little soldier, this valiant little dog heartlessly abandoned along a big tarred road, shivering with nowhere to go.  He left with dignity and pride just as any loved dog did. The best part is that Shaggy knew that. Yes, Shaggy knew he left behind a family, both humans, canine and feline brothers and sisters and many many friends and that makes us happy.

Dearest little Shaggy
June 8 to September 24, 2009
Forever Remembered
Much Loved
Always Missed
Good bye Shaggy, our brave fighter, little old dog.
Thank you for the precious memories.

Teddy and Pups
Teddy has been relocated. Hurray.
Praise God.
A few days ago, our plans for Teddy was realised as we managed to rescue Teddy and her gorgeous puppies. Unfortunately there are only three left. One black, One rocky and One sandy but they are fat, chubby and healthy.  They are very young, not even a month old and still need mommy's milk but they tumble around, in play and fun as they can't see well nor hear well yet. They only know mommy is around and all is well for them.  Thank God they know no better.

Their rescue is much more dramatic and traumatic than what is written on this blog but we will not go further. There is no point for we believe in moving forward. All we can say is we almost lost the pups. Yes they were literally rescued from the brink of death. If we had tarried just a few hours, we would have lost them for good so we want to praise God for His protection on our dear dogs. We also wish to say a huge Thank You for those who helped in the rescue efforts with their time, funding, support and encouragement.

Teddy has a bad skin and some bleeding but these can be rectified in time. She eats very well and is allowing her fosterer to bathe her with special medicated shampoo for her skin condition. She even allows us to carry and cuddle her pups.

Actually it isn't surprising that Teddy is so amicable because in the wild when we first started feeding her, she was very friendly and would come to us for pats and food. But when she gave birth, her motherly instinct overcame and she didn't allow anyone near her nest not because she was fierce but she was protecting her babies, especially when they were just born. Now that her pups are safe and growing well, she has become her old friendly and sweet self again. Her furless state shows her to be more fierce than she is and unfortunately poor Teddy has no tail to wag so when one sees a dog with teeth and no tail, our first assumption would be a fierce dog but she is not. She is actually a sweetheart and she is young. Much younger than she looks. We estimate Teddy to be 2 or 2.5 years old. Stress, worry and the environment has made her look so much older. Having no fur doesn't help either.  Given time we are sure that Teddy will be an exceptionally handsome dog for she has a breed in her, her stance and snout has proven her not an ordinary local dog but one with a background of a pedigree.

Teddy is very happy at the fosterer’s home. In a short span of 2 days, she behaves just like any other dog, running, happy, smiling and herds her three pups into their make shift nest of comfortable blanket and towels. Her pups are absolutely heavenly. They play one minute and fall asleep the next, even while they are sitting or standing and at any spot. We found out yesterday that Teddy loves bread, when you sit and eat a piece of bread or snack, she will come quietly and sit beside you and if she sees a last piece in your fingers, she assumes it is hers, and gently tries to pry it off your fingers. She is such a darling, very calm, docile and mild dog.

As we said goodbye last night, we gave a kiss to all the dogs, the current ones who are living there now, the Teddy pups and Teddy herself. As we plonked a kiss on her snout, she had an bemused expression on her face. She gazed into ours with awe, pleasant surprise and a little awkwardness. It was as if to say “That was nice, A kiss? What is a kiss? For me? You mean you love me? Can anyone love me?” With that, we had to kiss her one more time, cuddle her and stroke her gently.

Yes for you Teddy, all for you. You deserve love and kisses just like any other dog for you are special to us too. No more should you question why you are not wanted or unloved, no more would you wonder at other dogs on leash for one day you will have your own too. Yes we promise you Teddy that one day a family will come and ask for you because they want you for what you are, no matter how you look. You may not look as nice now with no fur but a higher love sees beyond looks, true love looks deep into the heart and one day, your true love will come. Yes Teddy, God has a plan for you just as He had overseen the entire rescue efforts. It was a miraculous intervention on His part for it was humanly not possible to have rescued your pups doomed for death. He will ensure your future, for that we know and await with eager hearts.

The photos below show a very happy Teddy and her beautiful pups. The fosterer has decided to adopt the black pup and so Sandy and Rocky are up for adoption. They are not ready to leave their mother yet but we are opening up the adoption now to private residences for they will grow to be mid size dogs. Regretfully these are not suitable for HDB dwelling due to the licencing restrictions. If you feel you can offer a home to Sandy or Rocky, please contact us at anaterry@singnet.com.sg

Teddy sits happily in her makeshift nest. She prefers this cage than anywhere else.  The cage door is never close for her to go in and out. We think she may be self-crate trained. Can you see her happy smile? Her infected eye already looks so much better without medication. Happiness can heal much more than meds.

This is Sandy (female). Sandy has a black stripe on her tail.

This is Rocky (male). So named as he is darker than his sandy sister.

Happiness is sleeping in peace, safe and secure

Little Teddy look-alike, already promised to the fosterer.
May she grow big and strong, faithful and loyal, protective and brave like her mommy.
